Being a Good Cat Housemate
Living with a cat can be a confusing business but it pays to take some time to understand some of the gestures. As they are superior to humans its down to you to put the leg work in educate yourself on cat ways. Here are some tips to help you co-exist with your cat relatively scratch free:
Tip 1 – Go easy with the petting
Cats like to be petted on their terms and on their terms only. They do NOT like to be smothers or man-handled. They will come to you when they require some affection and they will let you know in no uncertain terms when they have had enough. You need to be alert to when your cat has had enough. He will make moves to slink away or his tail may start to swish. Translated this means - back away from the cat!
Tip 2 – Stalking
Cats love stalking and pouncing. It’s just what they do. Most of the time this catty activity will focus on some other poor victim – a spider, a fly, a piece of flotsam – but if none of these things are available it may be your feet that gets it! Don’t take it personally. He’s just having a bit of fun!
Tip 3 – Just love to dig!
Cats are big into digging. Just think about how long they take in the litter tray, digging and scratching in pure catty heaven! However when they decide to do a spot of digging in your prize yukka plant it can be a little frustrating. Don’t yell at him. He won’t understand and will be most affronted. Cats hate citrus smells so bury lemon or orange skin in the pot and this should put him off.
