Adopt a Shelter Kitten
If you are looking to buy a kitten then please make your first stop the local cat shelter. Often they are full up with cats and kittens all longing for a loving home so unless you want a specific breed this should be the place your start your search. You can feel good that you are helping to keep the cat population under control and that you are providing an otherwise abandoned cat a home.
Kittens are very popular so be prepared for the fact you may be up against so stiff competition. Think long and hard about what type of cat you want. Do you have the time to groom and care for a long haired cat? Consider the commitment you’ll be making. A healthy cat can live for up to 20 years and there will be vet bills and pet insurance to pay along the way.
Also consider any existing pets you may have. If you have another cat getting another kitten can potentially be an ill advised thing to do. Cats are hugely territorial and prefer not to share their home with another cat. If you have a dog consider how cat-friendly it is and also consider smaller animals that may be natural prey for a cat.
Once you’re sure you want a cat then visit the shelter. Be aware that cats can be quite timid of strangers so their behaviour is in response to the environment and is not a reflection of their true character. Any fear and anxiety will melt away when they settle into your home.
